Interview with Sarah Brantley – Career and Student Services Coordinator. Sarah has been helping students find welding careers upon graduation for more than two years. She works at the Piedmont, SC campus, but we have Career and Student Services Coordinators at all campuses to assist students.

What is the Arclabs Employability Skills class that you teach?

It is a NCCER-based course that details the “ins and outs” of finding that dream welding job. The class is filled with great information on how to research welding companies, how to apply, the Human Resources onboarding process, information on company weld tests and tips for acing the interview. The two essential items that come out of this class are a new resume for students and the ability to practice interview skills so soon-to-be graduates feel 100% prepared.

Do you have to be (American Welding Society) AWS certified to work in the welding field?

No, you do not have to have these certifications. But it is important that you do earn either a certification or completion and/or an AWS credential while in school because it shows employers the standards that you have met. You can keep these AWS credentials as long as you maintain them every six months. Most welding companies will help you maintain these credentials.

*In our 1300 Hour Master Welder Program and our 900 Hour Advanced Welding Program, students can sit for 2-3 structural and pipe AWS certifications. See Recruiter for details.

If the work is hands-on, how important is the resume?

A well-written resume is crucial to the interview process because it shows employers why they should hire you. The goal is to market yourself to the best of your ability in a written format. Hiring companies want to know why you are qualified and your previous welding experience.
