Virtual Reality Welding

December brought Arclabs the opportunity to try out new training resources. At our Piedmont, SC campus, we were given the chance to try out both Miller and Lincoln Electric Virtual Reality (VR) welding machines.

Much of our younger student population is already familiar with this type of technology through computer and gaming platforms. These innovative machines allow students and prospective learners to try different methods outside of the weld shop. They can simulate welding GMAW, FCAW, SMAW and GTAW on materials like carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum. The VR machines even allow us to simulate a bend test for welding certification tests.

It is estimated that 52 million people in the United States used VR technology once a month in 2020 (eMarketer, 2020). The benefits of adding advanced VR welding machines to instruction can include training welders faster, reviewing different technique exercises including safety and compliance in the industry, possibly increasing certification pass rates, and replaying videos for more consistent feedback and identification of strengths and areas of opportunity for the student to work on.

There is nothing that can replace actual hands-on training in our welding industry, but we love to bring in different methods to train our students. What do you think about virtual reality welding?
