First founded in 1670, Charleston was ranked #1 in Best Small Cities in the US by Conde Nast for the 9th year in a row in 2019. With a population of 133,130, Charleston is full of history and is a popular tourist destination with 90 miles of coastline. The first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter, a local national monument. The Battery is a defensive seawall and promenade, famous for its stately Antebellum homes. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is one of the oldest plantations and contains one of the largest collections of azaleas and camellias in the country. Each year, Charleston holds festivals that are rich in Southern culture, including the Gullah culture.
