Columbia is the capital of South Carolina and is also home to the University of South Carolina. With a population of 133,451, Forbes has ranked it as one of the best cities for business and careers. The first city in the U.S. named for Christopher Columbus, it is known for the 170-acre Riverbanks Zoo and Garden and nearby Congaree National Park. The U.S. Army’s largest entry training installation, Fort Jackson, calls Columbia home as does McEntire Joint National Guard Station.
