The first shots of the Civil War were fired at Fort Sumter, a local national monument. The Battery is a defensive seawall and promenade, famous for its stately Antebellum homes. Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is one of the oldest plantations and contains one of the largest collections of azaleas and camellias in the country. Each year, Charleston holds festivals that are rich in Southern culture, including the Gullah culture.
